Indigenous Peoples’ Day was observed across the nation on October 12 while we were on fall break, but we did not want the day to go unrecognized. This holiday honors the Indigenous peoples, cultures, and ways of life that have existed for thousands of years on the lands and waters of what is now called the United States. The original inhabitants of the land we now call Rohnert Park are the Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo peoples. These communities are not simply part of our region’s history. They are still here, carrying forward generations of cultural knowledge and a deep connection to the land.
