As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the well-being and safety of our students, our 9th grade students will participate in an upcoming presentation from the counseling department focused on suicide prevention and how to support a friend who may be struggling.
Although the presentation is specifically for our 9th grade students, we also want the entire school community and all families to be aware that these conversations will be taking place. Students outside of 9th grade may hear their peers discussing the presentation or the topics covered, and we encourage families to check in with their children and allow space for questions or conversation if needed.
The presentation will take place during 9th grade PE periods on:
- Wednesday, October 21st
- Thursday, October 22nd
Students will be introduced to QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), a suicide prevention strategy that teaches people how to recognize signs that someone may be experiencing a crisis and how to connect that person with appropriate support. Similar to CPR, QPR is designed to give people the confidence and basic skills to respond when someone may be at risk.
An important message throughout the presentation will be that students are not expected to handle a serious situation on their own. If a friend shares something concerning, seeking help from a trusted adult is an important and appropriate response. Our goal in providing this information is to help students feel more prepared to recognize when a peer may need support and to understand where they can turn for help.
We recognize that conversations about suicide can feel sensitive and difficult. Many members of our community may have personal experience with the topic, and we will follow up to support individual students with processing any emotions that may come up for them. These conversations are one part of our broader efforts to create a school community where students feel comfortable asking for help and looking out for one another. While we believe QPR to be a valuable strategy that empowers students, we also respect that some families may feel it best that their student not participate in a presentation of this nature.
Please let us know if you do not want your student to attend the presentation by contacting Claire Ready at claire.ready@credohigh.org or (707) 794-6014.
If your student has questions or concerns following the presentation, please encourage them to reach out to a trusted adult, including a parent/guardian, school counselor, or another member of our school support team. Families are also welcome to contact me if they would like additional information about the presentation content.
Thank you for partnering with us in supporting the safety, connection, and well-being of our students.
Warmly,
Claire Ready
